General Appearance: Short-legged, heavy in bone, moving deliberately not clumsily. Smooth, short coat. Brushing once a week should keep it clean.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height - preferably no higher than 14 inches at the withers; more than 15 inches is a disqualification. Weight - 40 to 60 pounds.

Background: The Basset Hound is a devoted family companion. He's very laid-back and great with children. He's also an excellent hunter and tracker, second only to the Bloodhound. As a result, Bassets do tend to roam and should be leash walked or fenced in. Bassets are sensitive creatures and respond well to gentle correction. Their feelings are easily hurt. While the Basset's unique bark is music to his own ears, his song isn't for everyone. Keep your Basset occupied to keep his serenade from reaching the neighbors.
